The introduction of the CCASTD mentoring program is an important step in the continued growth of the workplace learning industry. The impact of mentoring goes far beyond what the mentee learns. The future of the field is dependent on the professional that is a leader and realizes that the value of mentoring will not only be felt now but also in the future. Once mentoring begins, the cycle will only continue to grow stronger. Good mentors are difficult to find but CCASTD has an excellent source of highly qualified learing professionals. But I am slightly puzzled because there seems to be some reluctancy in stepping forward and taking the mentoring challenge. I was wondering if someone could share their perspective on mentoring so I could have a better insight on a professional's hesitation to mentor.

Hi Sue --

What is the difference between mentoring and coaching?

What kind of time commitment is necessary for mentors to participate in the CCASTD mentoring program?

Coaching and mentoring may appear to be similar but the difference is the relationship and the interaction. A mentor is a guide and an advisor. A coach is a cheerleader that offers encourgement and support. A mentor shares knowledge and experience with a mentee and enhances the learning of specific skills.
The committment required for a mentor is based an agreed arrangement between the mentor and mentee. To be effective, a minimum of one monthly meeting is recommended over a six month span. The value of the mentoring process can not be measured in time but rather in satisfaction and results.
